The Unexpected

SM's Stedelijk Museum's, Hertogenbosch

From Picasso to Koons. The SM's has been building this part of its collection of artists' ceramics - the only one of its kind in the world - since 1985. In addition to the internationally renowned artists from the 20th century, numerous contemporary artists are represented. The steadily growing collection runs to around 150 works by 40 artists, by the 'modern classics' (Picasso, Chagall, Miro') and Fontana; by members of the international CoBrA movement; and contemporary work, the most recent is by the English sculptor Richard Deacon (2008).

comunicato stampa

The SM's – Stedelijk Museum 's-Hertogenbosch will show its collection of artists' ceramics for the first time in the Netherlands from 9 March to 1 June 2009. The SM's has been building this part of its collection – the only one of its kind in the world – since 1985.

In addition to the internationally renowned artists from the 20th century, numerous contemporary artists are represented. The oldest piece dates from 1906 and is by the painter Renoir, while the most recent is by the English sculptor Richard Deacon (2008).

There are two elements behind the idea for The Unexpected: first that of presenting an often overseen aspect of the work of otherwise celebrated artists; and secondly the fact that SM's is highlighting this virtually unknown part of its collection. In recent years, the collection has toured museums in several European countries, the United States, New Zealand and Japan. This will be its first showing in the Netherlands.

The steadily growing collection runs to around 150 works by 40 artists and is the only collection of its type anywhere in the world. There are three parts to The Unexpected: work by the 'modern classics' (Picasso, Chagall, Miró) and Fontana; by members of the international CoBrA movement; and contemporary work by many Dutch and internationally acclaimed artists.

Artists' ceramics differ from the work produced by ceramists, although the distinction has become less relevant by the 21st century. Unlike ceramists, artists often pay less heed to the technical demands imposed by the technique. Their free and adventurous handling of the material frequently results in more expressive work. Virtually all the participants are best known as painters, sculptors or conceptual artists. Working in clay gives them the opportunity to combine disciplines: painting being primarily the domain of the mind, sculpture that of space, and ceramics of both.
