Andres Serrano

Yvon Lambert, Paris

Following works such as Piss Christ and the History of Sex series, he is, to many, the artist who spawned a national debate on government funding of controversial art. Behind the myth and the scandal, Serrano is a well-accomplished and ever-evolving photographic artist capable of showing the ordinary in extraordinary ways. Serrano considers his latest series, America, as his greatest achievement. The series produced over three years depicts the cultural diversity of his country through over a hundred portraits.

Des Americains

Andres Serrano is one of America's most taboo contemporary artists.

Celebrities (such as Anna Nicole Smith, Ethan Hawke, Snoop Dogg and Bret Easton Ellis) juxtaposed with the every day John Doe citizen (a cowboy, a pimp, a firefighter, a veteran soldier, a boy scout) are scrutinized by Serrano's critical eye. The choice of the models are statement in itself. The idea of the series was sparked by a will to chronicle and document the news especially post September 11th. America is an intimate and honest body of work, which compels the viewer.

"America loves a hero and anti-hero. We are just as fascinated by the bad guys as we are by the good guys. Everyone likes to hear about everyone s downfall. That's why the news is so full of gossip and hearsay. We are a nation that thrives on other people s misfortune, as well as successes."

Andres Serrano's new exhibition at the Yvon Lambert gallery is also an opportunity to see his latest book: America and other work. Published by Taschen, it reviews the entire America series and previous photographic series ( Nomads, History of Sex, The Morgue, The Church) on over 368 pages.
