In 1973 the American artist Paul Thek (1933-1988) and his collaborators, the Artist’s Coop, made the environment Ark, Pyramid, Easter – A Visiting Group Show at the Kunstmuseum Luzern. This exhibition was the first in a series of atmospheric large-scale projects in Europe, which are amongst the most significant installations of the 1970s, now lost. Paul Thek, in Process (Luzern) will not only document the story in Lucerne but also illuminate problematic curatorial areas such as the exhibition value of preserved fragments and written documents by the artist or the challenge of biographical and historical objects.

The focus of this historical documentary exhibition is on Thek’s American and European reception between 1965 and 1976, his connection with the New York avant-garde scene of the 1960s, the performance work of the American theatre director Robert Wilson, who was also successful in Europe, and Thek’s significance in the context of the ‘individual mythologies’ of Documenta 5 (1972).
With different emphases the exhibition will be also shown at Moderna Museet in Stockholm and at the Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg.
