MASS MoCA to Show Work of Tadao Ando and Reed Hilderbrand in Conjunction
with Clark Exhibition
(North Adams, Massachusetts) In conjunction with the Sterling & Francine
Clark Art Institute, MASS MoCA (Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art)
presents Art and Nature: Tadao Ando and Reed Hilderbrand at the Clark Art
Institute, starting March 15 and running through May 25, 2003. The Clark
has commissioned Pritzker Prize-winning architect Ando and landscape
architects Reed Hilderbrand Associates to develop a new campus plan that
enhances the Clark's setting, expands the facilities for its academic and
public programs, and reconfigures its galleries to broaden the ways in which
visitors experience works of art.
The exhibition at MASS MoCA includes photographs of Reed Hilderbrand's
previous work, a 3-D fly-through of the new Clark campus and building
designed by Tadao Ando, the film "Light and Water" by Tadao Ando showing his
work in relation to nature, and an animated presentation highlighting
cultural attractions and natural resources of the Route 2 corridor between
Williamstown and North Adams.
Tadao Ando has a profound respect for nature and masterfully incorporates
water, light, and sky into his buildings wherever possible. The building
Ando has designed for the Clark features a one and a halfacre reflecting
pool that unifies the campus and acts as a bridge between the built
environment and the Clark's 140-acre campus. Doug Reed and Gary
Hilderbrand's approach to landscape design derives from a cultivated
awareness of each site's history and special character. At the Clark they
have developed a plan that improves access to the site and enhances the
existing landscape -- the meadows, fields, lawns, groves, and pond that are
an integral part of the visitor experience.

The Clark and MASS MoCA have a long tradition of collaboration and program
partnership. The Clark regularly collaborates on exhibitions at MASS MoCA
organized by students in the Williams/Clark Graduate Program in the History
of Art, and the two institutions have also collaborated on symposia and
joint admission programs. Kidspace, co-sponsored by the Clark, MASS MoCA,
and the Williams College Museum of Art, offers programs for children and
families. All three institutions also participated in "The Vienna Project,"
an unprecedented collaboration of eleven leading Berkshire cultural
institutions during the summer of 2002. Such programs have made the
Berkshires a model of cooperation for arts institutions in the U.S.
MASS MoCA, housed on a 13-acre campus of restored 19th-century factory
buildings, is the largest center for contemporary art in the country. During
the winter and spring (through May 31), MASS MoCA's galleries are open every
day except Tuesdays, from 11 A.M. to 5 P.M. Admission is $7 for adults, $2
for children 6-16, free for children under 6 and free for members at all
times. For additional information, call (413) 662-2111 or visit the website.
