Wishful fantasies and visions of the future in contemporary art
Rotterdam, Netherlands - SHINE presents: wishful fantasies and
visions of the future in contemporary art. The exhibition brings together
eighteen artists from the Netherlands and abroad. They express our desire to
break loose from harsh reality. Their work is equally optimistic and critical.
SHINE focuses on the ideal in an unmanageable reality.
The exhibition is a surprising, visionary ensemble with its diversity of
sculptures, video installations and paintings. The central work is a masterpiece
of the permanent collection of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen: A Computer Which
Will Solve Every Problem In The World by Walter De Maria (1935 USA). This floor
sculpture was created in 1984 for the largest hall in the museum measuring 40 x
40 metres. SHINE follows the example of the glittering promise of this
'computer which will solve every problem in the world'.
The participating artists lend their own lustre to down-to-earth reality. Liza
Lou (1969 USA) recreated a full-scale average backyard: with sparkling glass
beads it became an enchanting kitsch paradise.
The Garden of Eden created by painter Fred Tomaselli (1956 USA) emerges as a
psychedelic projection. Tomaselli uses the false power of medicine as an
antidote for harsh reality. Pills, varying from aspirin to narcotics such as
LSD, fan out in his collages into a fireworks of drugs for the eye.
SHINE has been organised by the Rotterdam City Collection, an autonomous part of
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. The City Collection places the work of
Rotterdam-based artists in an international perspective.
SHINE features: Paul Cox, Martin Creed, Walter De Maria, Jeroen Eisinga, Daan
van Golden, Christian Jankowski, Rince de Jong, Liza Lou, Tracey Moffatt, Saskia
Olde Wolbers, Roman Opalka, Gerco de Ruyter, Maria Roosen, Jean Marc Spaans,
Fiona Tan, Henk Tas, Fred Tomaselli, Dre' Wapenaar.
SHINE offers more than just a comfort to the eye; it is also a reflection on
life.
An accompanying book will be published in conjunction with NAi Uitgevers in
Rotterdam . It comprises contributions of Wilma Suto, curator of SHINE, author
Bas Heijne and the French philosopher Michel Onfray. This richly illustrated
book will contain both Dutch and English text.
