The opening of this project will take place in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts on Wednesday,
December 2 at 19:30. Starting at 20:30, the French artist Jean-Philippe Convert, who lives in
Brussels, will hold a performance that will give shape to his work. The work of Goele De Bruyn
will be exhibited as a performance. To close the evening there will be a performance by
Sylvester Anfang II, the renowned Flemish collective that describes itself as a folk-drone band,
and is described by others as psychedelic noise, with the emphasis on improvisation. The new film
by Nicolas Provost, Long Live the New Flesh, will be shown in premiere as an installation during
the opening on December 2 between 19:00 and 22:00 in Cinema Zuid, with a special guest. The
work Apologies 1 – 6 by Shaun Gladwell will be shown continuously on Saturday, December 12
between 19:00 and 22:00 in Cinema Zuid.
In this exhibition project, contemporary works of art are exhibited mainly in interaction with the
city, on façades, windows, screens, trees and squares. Contemporary art will be shown in the
city, in the community, with the surreptitious intent of artistically activating the urban
environment. Into the Light takes place in December, the perfect time to both literally and
figuratively ‘light up’ the city: Into the Light serves to counteract the lack of light during the
shortest and darkest days of the year.
Into the Light aims to unveil the complexity of the image and its interaction with its
environment. Together the works form an eclectic collection of unique and occasionally strong
images, the works united by the medium of light. The poetic neon sculpture by the Swiss, Marie
José Burki, is situated next to Nicolas Provost’s ‘horror film’ and the tender and glowing hot video
Apologies 1-6 by the Australian, Shaun Gladwell, a work which was also shown at the Venice
Biennial, 2009. Some works illuminate the darkness, such as the work of Andreas Golinsky; other
works attempt to generate visualization and meaning through the medium of light, such as those
by Pepa Ivanova and Tamar Frank. Whether by means of projections, light sculptures, animation
films or video installations, they all originated from the fascination and commitment of the
participating artists and their individual perspectives. Alongside existing works, there are also
works on display that were made specifically for this project, including the works by Marie José
Burki, Pepa Ivanova, Joris Van de Moortel and Cel Crabeels.
Prominent international artists, such as Marie José Burki (CH), Shaun Gladwell (AU), Wilhelm
Sasnal (PL) and Andreas Golinsky (DE), as well as recognized Flemish artists, such as Jos De
Gruyter & Harald Thys, Ria Pacquée and Cel Crabeels are taking part in this project. Young
artists will also be given the opportunity to exhibit their works, such as the promising artist Joris
Van de Moortel and the Bulgarian Pepa Ivanova. A number of works will be exhibited in
cooperation with Antwerp galleries: Vaast Colson (Maes & Matthys Gallery), Tamar Frank
(Koraalberg Gallery), Nicolas Provost (Tim Van Laere Gallery), Bart Stolle (Zeno X Gallery) and
Angel Vergera (Stella Lohaus Gallery).
In continuation of last year’s project, the KMSKA and the Museum Square at the Leopold De
Waelplaats in Antwerp will serve as home base. Works will be exhibited both inside and outside
