This exhibition of approximately 70 works presents an expanded notion of the illustrated book as shown in the mediums of prints, drawings, illustrations, film, and sound. The exhibition begins with photographic and textual documentation of Marcel Duchamp's Unhappy Readymade. Also includes numerous works in which artists appropriate books by others, including an untitled sculpture from 1989 by Martin Kippenberge and artists who tackle the idea of books in film (William Wegman), sound works (On Kawara), prints (Edward Ruscha), and drawings (Steve Wolfe) are also represented.

This exhibition of approximately 70 works presents an expanded notion of the illustrated book as shown in the mediums of prints, drawings, illustrations, film, and sound. The exhibition begins with photographic and textual documentation of Marcel Duchamp’s Unhappy Readymade (1919), for which the artist, while traveling, asked his sister back home to hang a geometry book on his balcony in order to let the wind flip and tear the pages.

The exhibition also includes numerous works in which artists appropriate books by others, including an untitled sculpture from 1989 by Martin Kippenberger made partly of books, and a copy of Duchamp’s catalogue raisonne rebound by David Hammons called The Holy Bible: New Testament (2002).

Artists who tackle the idea of books in film (William Wegman), sound works (On Kawara), prints (Edward Ruscha), and drawings (Steve Wolfe) are also represented. The exhibition also sets the stage for a number of artists who have conceived of installations to display books in public contexts (Brian Belott, Allen Ruppersberg, Josh Smith, and Lawrence Weiner). Organized by Christophe Cherix, Curator, Department of Prints and Illustrated Books, The Museum of Modern Art.
