Promising to be one of Shanghais biggest, most interesting and imaginative exhibitions of 2004, Art Scene Warehouse‚s latest show, 11 + 1: Crowds and Voids brings together the work of eleven exciting and creative Chinese artists (one of whom has taken an English name) and one German artist (who has taken a Chinese name) living and working in and inspired by China.

Despite the diversity of the artistic personalities and ideas, the displayed works are linked by a common interest in the relationship between the individual and his/her surroundings. Ranging from bustling crowded street scenes and free-floating masses of people to lonely people in barren rooms and abstract chaotic lines, these artists‚ works can be seen as a contemplation on the position of the individual not only in life in general, but also in Chinas modern society, where everything is constantly changing. Such transformation creates freedom and countless possibilities on the one hand but can also result in emptiness and the loss of a clear direction. This is especially true for life in Chinas urban environment, where societys far-reaching changes are occurring at a particularly rapid pace.

The artists featured in the show come from throughout China; some of them (such as Sun Liang, Zhong Biao and Lu Peng) are among Chinese most famous, internationally exhibited contemporary artists, whereas others are relative newcomers to the art scene. For example, acrylic and Chinese ink artist Lu Peng has exhibited throughout the USA and Europe, but this is his first major exhibition in Shanghai. The artists featured also come from different parts of China, and of course one is originally from Europe, working in a variety of media, from oil and acrylic to Chinese ink and mixed media.
