Le Nouveau festival

Centre Pompidou, Paris

This year, the Centre Pompidou's Nouveau festival comes in a completely new, much longer format lasting three months, and now stands as an even higher point in the Centre Pompidou's forward-looking, multidisci- plinary programme.

Since its first edition in 2009, the Nouveau festival has been a platform for expression and production: a laboratory for new forms of creation. This year, the festival tries out a new, extended format: a high point in the Centre Pompidou's forward-looking and multi-disciplinary programme. And so for three months, visual artists, performers, dancers, theorists and film directors will be playing in the same field, creating a dialogue between art and games. The relationship between art and games, which started at the end of the 19th century and flourished throughout the 20th, is more alive and fertile than ever today. It constitutes an epochal fact, and what could shine a spotlight on it better than the Centre Pompidou's Nouveau festival? This relationship is expressed through different focuses and processes – often involving participation, and frequently performance – which reveal all its richness and variety.

Three months for playing and thinking. The artistic posterity of Stéphane Mallarmé's Roll of the dice is considered through the eye of philosopher Quentin Meillassoux. A room filled of experimental Fluxus games (by Yoko Ono, George Brecht, Robert Filliou and others) presents activable reproductions reflecting the spirit of the movement, in a total blend of art and the game.

However, games contribute not only a state of mind to artists, but also forms. Alongside works by the great player-artist Alighiero Boetti, Michel Aubry's La Roulette française is activated with the help of croupiers. The lucky players don't win money, but get to hear music. Other games complete this casino of forms. The artist Julien Prévieux tackles video games from the angle of the "bug", from the images and situations bugs produce in games to the interference they create outside their worlds, and the games and fiction that use bugs as a basic component. For this Nouveau festival, the Ping-Pong Club opened by Július Koller in Bratislava in 1970 is reactivated in Forum -1 with assistance from Rirkrit Tiravanija: a way of evoking the political aspect of games.

Throughout the Nouveau festival, seminars, talks and debates stimulate thinking and act as a counterpoint to the works and games on offer. As well as sessions dedicated to the Coup de dés, OuLiPo and the history of the cabaret, one of the highlights of this programme of encounters is the appearance of the writer Jonathan Coe, who talks about the little-known figure of B.S. Johnson, author of a random book.
