Anya Gallaccio
4 April - 18 May
First & Second Floor Galleries

This is the first survey exhibition of work by the acclaimed British artist Anya Gallaccio, comprising of new sculptural projects alongside some of her most celebrated work. Concerned essentially with the notion of permanence and the balance struck between growth and decay, Gallaccio is renowned for her engaging light touch and paradoxical grasp of the ephemeral. Described as 'wonderfully unreliable experiments,' her installations make use of a wide range of commonplace materials such as chocolate, flowers, sugar, chalk, candles, vegetables and lead, revealing the everyday as remarkable.

The exhibition includes a new version of Stroke (1993) in which the audience is surrounded by painted walls of chocolate and Aspire (1999) in which lit candles are suspended from the ceiling on large discs, the wax aroma filling the gallery space. In contrast to these more transient works, her bronze cast twigs and tree will be exhibited along with cast sprouting potatoes. A new floor-work, specially created for the exhibition, continues Gallaccio's recent use of molten sugar as a sculptural form.

This exhibition is kindly supported by the Stanley Thomas Johnson Foundation, The Henry Moore Foundation and British Sugar.

A limited edition multiple commissioned by The Multiple Store will be on sale throughout the exhibition.

everything is interesting
4 April - 18 May

This is the first presentation of work in the UK by Canadian artist Kelly Mark, consisting of a number of events, interventions and performances. With a trademark conceptualism, based on obsessive modes of collection, acts of duration and repetition, she focuses intensely on the minute detail of everyday life, leading on the premise that 'everything is interesting.' Project kindly supported by The Birmingham Post and The Canadian High Commission, London.

Glow House
31 March - 6 April
23 Wake Green Road, Moseley, Birmingham

For Glow House, Mark takes a local suburban house and floods the interior with the cool grey-blue light of televisions. Viewed externally and only at night, small flickerings of the screens become a glow emanating from the entire house. With thanks to Qurban Hussein.

everything is interesting

Badges and postcards bearing the statement everything is interesting will be circulated around the city of Birmingham through letter-drops and mailings. Small works of art, these anonymous statements will feed into the fabric of the city's life.
___________

I really should...
4 April - 18 May
Ikon Tower

A recorded list of things that the artist feels she ought to do, a verbalisation of mental notes, reminders of things that are all-too-often forgotten, amounting to a mantra for self-improvement. "I really should learn French, I really should read War and Peace, I really should give more to charity..."
___________

War Pigs
4 April - 18 May
Ikon Tower Room

Mark films her cat sprawled on a sofa between two hi-fi speakers blaring a Black Sabbath song, "Evil minds that plot destruction, sorcerers of death's construction." The cat lies unmoved by the music. Sometimes an ear twitches but the indifference is exemplary. Mark's cat suggests not only her alter ego but also a metaphor for the nature of her art practice.

Hiccup

A performative project taking place over the course of a fortnight. The artist sits on the same step of a public building, at the same time each day, wearing the same clothes. Repeating a pre-set routine of simple actions, her constancy foils the variety and unpredictability of the action around her.
