The ICA presents the first major UK exhibition of work
by the young German artist Lothar Hempel. Based in
Cologne and gaining an increasing reputation in the
international art-world, Hempel will create new work
specifically for the ICA galleries comprising a three
room sculptural installation and a film which will be
presented on five monitors displayed throughout the
exhibition spaces.
In the lower gallery, Strike, a medieval style house
without walls, provides a theatrical, dramatically lit
environment for the cut out characters and puppets
within. Under a street lamp just outside the house is a
deserted canteen, where the aroma of recently
consumed coffee fills the air.
In the upper galleries, the second installation Frost
consists of a single cubic metal framework. The open
sided construction is filled with two-dimensional
figures representing a scene from a duel. This cubic
presentation resembles a tableau or still life.
Also in the upper galleries, Jubilation, takes the form of
a miniature stage set, based on the surface of a flat
planet and reminiscent of a slowly rotating record
player.
The installations can be viewed as one connected
composition, a parallel universe, or a place for spiritual
and moral reconsideration.
