Art+Mountains is an exhibition of contemporary art in the unique setting of The Alpine Club and includes painting, drawing, sculpture and film by twenty-six international artists looking at the relationship between representations of mountain landscapes and our actual experiences of them.

Appropriately, 2002 is the International Year of Mountains. The impact of technology, urbanism and mass tourism on the wilderness has made the pursuit of hardcore adventure and the sublime increasingly fruitless occupations.

The Alpine Club represents over 150 years of mountaineering history, documenting the often-estranged relationships between rival philosophers, writers and climbers for whom mountaineering was in some way the embodiment of the search for enlightenment.

“Climbing is involved, nervy, tactile and committed. Yet it is contradictory, unnatural even, in that it often avoids the path of least resistance with no more reason to support it than the facile feint of ‘because it is there…’” (Paul Claydon)

Art+Mountains includes Neal Beggs, Herbert Brandl, Kate Bright, Stuart Croft, Jason Davidge, Peter Doig, John Dugger, John Frankland, Hamish Fulton, Tim Gardner, Vidya Gastaldon, Brian Griffiths, Ilana Halperin, Sophie von Hellerman, Chantel Joffe, Andrew Mania, Masakatsu Kondo, Henri Krokatsis, David Medalla, Mariele Neudecker, Jean Odermatt, Dan Shipsides, David Thorpe, Kerri Sellens, Zoe Walker & Marijke van Warmerdam. Many of the artists have made new work for the exhibition.
