What started as an unconventional diary, is now exactly what the title of this show suggests, a full-on invasion. The artist's own personal archives alone contain over 25,000 postcards. Mothersbaugh, a member of the quirky 80's band DEVO, started creating equally quirky postcards in his downtime as something to share with friends. Mothersbaugh now wants to share these postcards with a worldwide audience. Humorous and telling, Mothersbaugh's cards are both a personal diary and a cultural commentary. The prints in the exhibition are scanned from original postcard sketches, and then embellished and distorted with text, photographs, and other additions, such
as plastic googly eyes. Layered both in images and concept, the cards are eye catching and thought provoking. Mothersbaugh's art is not only, as he puts it 'about getting affordable artwork into the hands and homes of first time art buyers,' but also about sharing an intriguing look at our cultural environment by way of Mothersbaugh's own visual culture.
Miranda Zimmer- Visual Palindrama (anddnaanddnaanddna)
Engaging and colorful, Zimmer's miniscule paintings are more provocative to the reflective mind than a Rorschach test might be. Zimmer chooses brightly colored house paint sample squares as her canvases and then folds another color of paint inside each tiny square. The resulting random design is then detailed with tiny dots of paint. The final product is a minute, but captivating work of art. The small paintings are installed in large groups and are mounted one inch from the wall. This exhibition will showcase approximately 600 of the works arranged in several groupings. Distinct arrangements such as recognizable shapes or a random constellation patterns,
draw the viewer further into the psychedelic microcosm Zimmer creates with these minute, colorful squares. What begins as an interest sparked perhaps by the colors or miniature size of the works quickly becomes a more insightful contemplation at what each tiny composition really means.
