How will design respond to the challenges and needs of our changing world? How can the means of design be used to address the problems of society or to improve the wellbeing and quality of life of individuals?

Produced by Design Museum and curated by the museum’s debuty director Jukka Savolainen, Designworld – Designing the New World considers various areas of contemporary design and the significance of the design sector at the levels of society, ecology and the individual. The exhibition addresses current issues and proposed solutions with reference to international and Finnish design concepts, projects and products. Design Museum’s exhibition schedule for 2012 is part of official programme of World Design Capital Helsinki 2012.

Taking useability and wellbeing as its starting points, Designworld proceeds via critical design to ecological and responsible design, which is approached from various perspectives. The exhibition also considers the significance of new technologies and materials in contemporary design and presents the design process in concrete terms through the Aalto University’s 365 Wellbeing Design Exploration and Experimentation (DEE) project. The DEE space at the present exhibition will transform and live along with the project. Visitors to the museum can also participate in this transforming working process. The Wood Program of the Aalto University has produced the LIINA provisional shelter for crisis zones, which visitors to the exhibition can test in practice.

Designworld presents recent contemporary design in global perspective, with emphasis on diversity and an open-minded approach. There are examples of design from almost all continents. The exhibition features leading names such as Tord Boontje of the Netherlands, the Campana brothers from Brazil, Anthony Dunne & Fiona Raby of England, Yrjö Kukkapuro of Finland and Patricia Urquiola of Italy.

There are also projects from. MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Stanford University, EPFL – École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne and Tongji University in Shanghai, among others. Benetton’s FABRICA communication centre brings its “Mobile Museum” to Design Museum with “The Future” as its theme.
