On 24 April 2008 the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm will open its doors to Faces of Time – a grand exhibition devoted to our most fundamental measuring technology. Clocks and watches of every conceivable sort and from every period will be on show, from intriguing masterpieces of early technology to timepieces designed to satisfy dreams of conspicuous luxury. The exhibition comprises more than 400 fascinating timepieces from five centuries.

Measuring the passing of time has always been vitally important in human affairs. The interaction between technology and design in relation to the concept of time forms the focus of a positively pyrotechnic display of watches, clocks and chronometers. Half of the items in the exhibition come from the museum’s own collections while the other half have been loaned by collectors, corporations, palaces and public buildings. There are ancient devices for measuring time along side the wristwatch that Swedish astronaut Christer Fuglesang wore in space. There are timepieces used by royalty and celebrities and clocks that are associated with dramatic events. Twentieth-century luxury sparkles in the form of watches from Cartier and other fashionable jewellers.

The Nationalmuseum will be publishing a catalogue in conjunction with the exhibition. Fifteen authors consider the precision technology of measuring time as well as the tempting luxury. We all have a relationship with time. Time is basic to everything from philosophy, astronomy and working life to interior decoration, design and ebullient bling. Make time for a visit!
