Two exhibitions

Craig Gallery, Los Angeles

Craig Gallery is pleased to present “Stories From Nowhere” an exhibition of photographs from Joe Medina and Jose Martinez.

Addressing issues of everyday life, the relationship between photography/film, and the complexities of human emotional landscapes, the artists, independent of one another, compose a vision of the unseen, the silent, and the spaces that make up our daily lives. The images merge human psychology with structured visual representation.

"I'm not always sure what my work is about when going into a sequence of images, I have certain ideas but nothing finite or literal. I'm not interested in finding solutions for all the questions I have when going into a piece, if anything I'm far more interested in the questions that arise from my relationship with the work than anything else, the abstract rather than the palpable is far more interesting to me."

“The Photo Novella” is a photo autobiography in progress and should be viewed as such. The photographs are illustrations loosely based on stories and emails I sent to friends about my experiences living in a small place in the desert. The images consist of my immediate family and the desert landscapes of Arizona. The portraits and landscapes are reflections of mental states and recreated memories. Memories and photographs are by their nature subjective.

A cloudy sky becomes a calm moment of acceptance amidst turmoil. A snake’s eye view through an orange tree becomes both a search for answers and a site of concealment. “

Reception for the artists on November 30 from 6-9pm.
