International art fair

Following the successful premiere of COLOGNE FINE ART in 2006, the event will feature new autumn scheduling in 2007, from 31st October to 4th November. The new Cologne-based fair once again looks set to be a success; sector representatives around the world already know that its underlying concept will feature a crossover of genres and periods in art history that will open up tremendous potential. Each year, the fair’s exquisite special shows on various themes are an integral part of the appealing concept for visitors and exhibitors alike. In addition, the preparations to date for the fair indicate that the new autumn scheduling should enable the sector to target potential customers in one of the regions of Europe with the highest population density and cultural diversity.

Between 180 and 190 international art dealers, editors, antique dealers and gallery owners will be exhibiting at COLOGNE FINE ART in autumn 2007, presenting a full spectrum of artworks from prehistory and early history right up to contemporary art. The appealing, exciting scope of the fair will result in an enjoyable tour of discovery for the visitors. On show will be classic and modern art and antiques from the following product groups: (classic art) non-European art, tribal art and ethnographica, Old Masters and 19th century works, furniture, antiques, graphics, tapestries, carpets, weapons, military items, musical instruments, clocks and watches, jewellery, miniatures, icons, Art Nouveau, art deco, Bauhaus and modern design; (modern art) classic modernism, post-war art, contemporary art, art editions, photography and Art Brut; and (antiquarian books) books, autographs, incunabula, maps, graphic works on paper and printed graphics. The quality and authenticity of the works offered will be insured by art vetting panels and committees for assessing the credentials of the galleries that have applied to be exhibitors.

Concept includes special shows
The concept that underlies COLOGNE FINE ART also includes special shows. A major exhibition in the applied arts section will showcase 18th and 19th century Meissen porcelain from a private collection. In addition, the Central Archive of the International Art Trade (ZADIK) will stage an exhibition on the life and work of Wolf Vostell, a protagonist of the Fluxus movement in Germany, to tie in with a Vostell retrospective at Cologne’s City Museum. The plans for 2007 have become more concrete, calling for a continuation of the widely renowned Art Brut exhibitions that sparked such great interest in the past. Taking the working title “Art of the Media”, Claudia Dichter, Michael Krajewski and Susanne Zander will present an exhibition project showing a representative cross-section of medium artists who became mediums as a result of activities related to Spiritism or their personal experiences. One example is the miner Augustin Lesage, who heard an unfamiliar voice down the mine telling him that he would one day be a painter. A few months later, say the curators, he bought paints and canvasses, and painted 800 large pictures according to what the voices told him. The curators also state the following: “Margarete Held was guided by Shiva, the god of the Indians and Mongols; Madge Gill described herself as a medium of ‘Myrninerest’; and Victorien Sardou communicated with the spirits of Mozart and Bernard Palissy.”

COLOGNE FINE ART 2006 attracted 30,000 visitors. The target groups are museum directors and curators; institutional, investment and professional private collectors; auction houses, libraries, art associations and cultural institutions; artists and art experts; banks and insurance companies; architects, doctors and lawyers; and anyone interested in art and selected applied arts. The conceptual sponsors of COLOGNE FINE ART are the Rhineland Art Dealers’ Association (RKV), the Federal Association of German Art Publishers (BDKV) and the Association of German Antiquarian Book Dealers (VDA).
