El Otro/ The Other One

Antonia Guzman (b. 1954), the distinguished Argentinean artist, will have her first solo exhibition with Couturier Gallery of recent work from a series titled El Otro / The Other One. The paintings reflect her ongoing exploration and observations of immigration and isolation - of being the “other" in an adopted country. The opening artist’s reception will be Friday, January 19, 7-9pm.

Los Angeles, a city of immigrants, witnessed an enormous demonstration on March 25, 2006 protesting a proposed federal crackdown on illegal immigration. Antonia Guzma'n participated in the rally which prompted this series “El Otro" after witnessing thousands of ‘others’ demonstrating for a place to establish an identity, a sense of self. For Guzma'n, the “other" is the recent arrival who has not assimilated into the cultural fabric of the city, has not yet accepted him or herself in the adopted environs and becomes the intrusive one in the new landscape. In Guzma'n words “…The other can be the different one, the third in a discord, the foreigner, or the son that breaks up a couple. There is always an "other". The matter is in which form “the other" can be incorporated or rejected from his/her landscape and surrounding, but there will always be an “other"."

Guzma'n’s visual vocabulary incorporates a geometry that echoes land and cityscapes, constructing environments for the “other," a figure that may appear as an abstract symbol or a literal figure of a person. Her “others," are often represented as stick figures with triangular heads and are immediately identifiable as the lone geometric form in the vast landscape. Guzma'n’s bold and modulated palette distinctly refer to colors associated with Latin American painting: the lush reds, oranges and greens referring to vibrant vegetation, the more somber ochres, yellows and browns to the cities or land, the various planes distinguished by black and white lines, creating patterns resembling interlocking blocks similar to design patterns found in Nazca textiles as well as Incan stone buildings.

Antonia Guzma'n has exhibited extensively in Europe, Latin America and the United States. Her work may be found in numerous public collections including: University of Essex, Collection of Latin American Art. Colchester, England; The Pompey Museum, Nassau, Las Bahamas; Marie d’Uckange. Uckange, France; Fundacio'n Banco Cooperativo de Caseros, Buenos Aires.

An exhibition catalogue will be available.

This exhibition is presented with the support of the General Consulate of Argentina in Los Angeles, California.
