Art Cologne 2006

Art Cologne, Koln

The fair inspires more spirited debate than any other leading international fair for modern and contemporary art. The world’s longest-established art fair is marking its 40th anniversary this year, and the broad spectrum of art it presents — from important modern works to the latest art by today’s artists — provokes conflicting opinions and in-depth discussions in the art world.

comunicato stampa

Last year, the world’s longest-established fair for modern and contemporary art moved to Halls 4 and 5 at the Cologne exhibition centre, which may well have been the biggest change in the fair’s long history. This year, the international art market ART COLOGNE will be held for the 40th time.

And there will also be new developments and innovations in this anniversary year, because change is a hallmark of ART COLOGNE, one of the world’s leading art fairs. The field of exhibitors includes many internationally renowned galleries. The exhibitors’ stands will present a comprehensive overview of the art of the 20th and 21st centuries — from modernism to the most recent works by contemporary artists. In addition to important works from the post-war period, the exhibitors are increasingly focusing on contemporary art.

An integral feature of ART COLOGNE is “Open Space", a curated outdoor sale exhibition area for contemporary art. Open Space premiered last year and was very well received by exhibitors, visitors and journalists.

ART COLOGNE reflects an awareness of its traditions, which include in particular the promotion of new art and young artists. The work of young artists is promoted by the “New Talents" programme, which is supported by the Federal Commissioner for Cultural and Media Affairs, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the City of Cologne and Koelnmesse. A jury will select the “Best of the Best", and the winner will be honoured with the ART COLOGNE Young Artist Prize, which was presented for the first time in 2005.

The “New Contemporaries" programme, which is sponsored by the SK Culture Foundation of the Sparkasse KolnBonn, promotes new galleries. The programme allows galleries to take part in ART COLOGNE at reasonable prices.

Supporting and promoting new art and young artists isn’t the only high priority at ART COLOGNE, however.
International Art Fair

Beginning this year, the fair’s commitment to the entire international art market will be underlined by “Hidden Treasures", which will be an annual programme intended to introduce as many as five artists who are 40 or older. These “hidden treasures" will be artists whose place on the art market has not yet stabilised , although their work is relevant and important from an art historical standpoint: In short, desirable art at rather attractive prices.

ART COLOGNE inspires more spirited debate than any other leading international fair for modern and contemporary art. The world’s longest-established art fair is marking its 40th anniversary this year, and the broad spectrum of art it presents — from important modern works to the latest art by today’s artists — provokes conflicting opinions and in-depth discussions in the art world.

For those who would like to add their voices to the dialogue, a visit to ART COLOGNE is a must. We can assure you that the trip to Cologne will be well worthwhile. More than 200 top international galleries, including the leading art dealers from Europe and abroad, will be presenting their offerings in Halls 4 and 5 at the Cologne exhibition centre. In combination with a top-quality special exhibition, art from the 20th and 21st centuries — with a strong emphasis on works by modernist, post-war and contemporary artists — will ensure a fascinating experience and a unique atmosphere for buying art.

The ART COLOGNE programmes “New Talents" and “New Contemporaries" introduce young artists and new galleries to the international art market. And with “Hidden Treasures", a new programme making its debut this year, ART COLOGNE shows that its scope extends beyond today’s dominant fascination with the contemporary. The programme will feature individual presentations of works by as many as five “hidden treasures" — artists 40 years or older whose works are clearly important from an art historical perspective and thus relevant for today’s art market.

And for collectors, this also means desirable art at rather attractive prices. ART COLOGNE also offers the entire infrastructure and range of services provided by Koelnmesse, one of the world’s largest trade fair companies. Construction at the exhibition centre is still proceeding in high gear. When ART COLOGNE welcomes exhibitors and visitors from 1st to 5th November 2006, however, the new Entrance South will be completed. And its just a stone’s throw from the Koelnmesse Deutz railway station and its tram, commuter train and InterCity high-speed rail links. From there it’s just a few metres to the exhibition halls, via the Trade Fair Boulevard.
