DiVA Paris 06

KUBE Hotel, Paris

DiVA is the first art fair dedicated to Video and Digital Art. Since the invention of photography, nothing has had a greater impact on artistic practice than the emergence of the personal video camera and, later, digital technology. Now, with the aid of computers, the cameras and video camcorders have become the ultimate tools in creating a dynamic arena for art making, regardless of the final product.

(Digital & Video Art) Fair

DiVA is the first art fair dedicated to Video and Digital Art. Since the invention of photography, nothing has had a greater impact on artistic practice than the emergence of the personal video camera and, later, digital technology. Now, with the aid of computers, the cameras and video camcorders have become the ultimate tools in creating a dynamic arena for art making, regardless of the final product. With the advent of video and computer technology, artists are no longer restricted by their immediate technical parameters.

DiVA first edition was titled "Moving Images" a one night exhibition on November 15th 2003 at the Windsor Hotel in New York. In 2005, DiVA premiered in New York, Brussels, Cologne, and Paris. In 2006, DiVA will premiere in Miami Beach.

Because of its focus on Digital & Video Art, DiVA has a unique approach.

While geared toward the future to bring the next art here, DiVA acknowledges the past through the artists and works that have pioneered this great art form. Since its first edition, DiVA has paid tribute to Nam June Paik, Bruce Nauman, Jonas Mekas and Andy Warhol.

Catalogues are also designed to put artists first. Each artist is given 2 pages, listed by name in the catalogue. The gallery information, rather than occupying a large portion of the design as in most exhibition catalogues, in the DiVA catalogue takes a smaller space, about 1/5 of a page per gallery. This layout emphasizes the artist above all.

DiVA is the first art fair to offer to view actual video online and is now the only art far to offer the public an opportunity to purchase art work online.

From October 26th to the 29th, The KUBE Hotel in the 18th arrondissement will host the DiVA Paris. In this second edition, DiVA Paris offers a selection of 11 international galleries that have dedicated special attention to the work of their artists that use video and digital media to express themselves. Galleries will use the guest rooms as exhibition space.

We chose the Kube Hotel because it is a perfect fit for the fair. Its unusual location matches the exclusive identity of the fair. The architecture of the hotel matches our focus on Video and New Media.

The hotel offers large plasma screens in the bar/lounge lobby, the hallways upstairs are painted in black and open to rooms with while walls. The hotel offers the exhibitors the option to remove the beds and the furniture, transforming each space into a private gallery. The interior court finds a large glass cube used as reception area where Jongbum Choi presented a monumental video performance at DiVA 05.

DiVA is the first art fair dedicated to video and digital art. Since the invention of photography, nothing has had a greater impact on artistic practice than the emergence of the personal video camera, and later, digital technology. Today, cameras and video cameras, digital and otherwise, with the aid of computers, have become the ultimate tool in creating a dynamic arena for artistic expression without the limits imposed by the artist’s physical surroundings.

The concentration of serious collectors in Paris, both contemporary art lovers and those who collect as part of family tradition, makes Paris one of the most important places for exhibiting video art and new media. DiVA Paris promises to be a valuable addition to the city’s art arena with local collectors welcoming video as a serious part of their collections.
