CIRCA Puerto Rico 06, the first international Caribbean and Central American art fair will be held from May 25-28, 2006 at the New Convention Center of Puerto Rico featuring over 50 exhibitors from Latin America, the U.S., Europe and Australia. To demonstrate the strength of local and international art, 9 Puerto Rican galleries will join over 20 foreign galleries and other organizations related to the arts, as highlight museums, non-for-profit institutions and alternative venues.

As said by the art directors of the event, Elvis Fuentes and Celina Nogueras, “CIRCA represents an opportunity to highlight the work of international artists and to corroborate the cultural richness of the region". One of the main objectives of CIRCA is to narrow the links between gallery owners, collectors and both local and international artists, while attracting the interest of art critics, curators, scholars and public interested in art. The fair will display a multidisciplinary art program including drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, photography and video.

As main features, CIRCA will organize two curated exhibitions: 10 x 10, a show by 10 internationally reknowned artists curated by Elvis Fuentes that will exhibit works by Andre's Serrano, Nari Ward, Miguel Luciano, Dean MacGregor, Edin Velez, We will have the presence of the artist Reynold Rodriguez, Antonio Martorell, Charles Juhasz-Alvarado and Glexis Novoa; and In the Spot: States of Anxiety, which curated by Paco Barraga'n- will show the work of emerging artists whose work embarks upon the theme of anxiety and on how this sensation manifests in our interpersonal, sexual relations, in our search for status, in architecture and in contemporary history, among other aspects. Each year, the section In the Spot will have a guest curator.

Other sections that will also be as part of the event are: SOLO, presenting the work by 5 previously selected independent artists, and Distrito CIRCA, where museums, art schools, publications and institutions linked to the art world will offer information on their products and services.

The exhibitions at CIRCA Puerto Rico 06 will have a complimentary series of panels, conferences and seminars. Among the panels are Fairs and Biennials, examining the dynamic scenario of fairs and biennials and their relation with contemporary international art. This panel will be moderated by the Spanish curator Paco Barraga'n and will count on the participation of Anton Vidokle, artist and curator of Manifesta; Hedwig Feijen, director of Manifesta; Paul Greenaway, gallery owner and founder of the SALA festival (South Australian Living Artists); and Deborah Cullen, curator of The (S) Files/ The Selected Files, the biennial at El Museo del Barrio, and director of the curatorial program of that museum. Other activities included are the symposia Collecting Today: Artistic Practices in Puerto Rico and The Art of Appreciation: Collecting Latin American Paintings and Sculptures, in charge of specialist Mari'a Bonta de la Pezuela from the auction house Sotheby’s. It will take place at Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (MAPR) during an activity titled “Breakfast at the Museum".

Programmed to be held shortly after the Buenos Aires art fair, arteBA, and opening briefly after the Latin American art auctions in New York, CIRCA Puerto Rico ’06 will bring the best of modern and contemporary art to the local and international public. This will be the first and only fair of its kind in the Caribbean and Central America. CIRCA Puerto Rico 06 rises in moments in which multiple specialists are keeping themselves informed on the artistic currents of this region and where a large number of new collectors are rising.
